Lead Quote:
“The BC SVP process ensures that your money is being spent in the way you’d spend it as a business person – with a clear business objective.”
Prior to joining BC SVP, Gary Yurkovich had not had much exposure to the nonprofit sector, but had always felt that he’d like to help out. Now, after 18 months as a Partner, he reports that his understanding of the nonprofit sector has been expanded greatly, and he has become a vocal proponent of the SVP model.
“I always knew there were lots of opportunities, but SVP offers a great process for helping to sort out which organizations and causes matter to you personally – and how you might be able to help. I like what we do because it’s about improving the sustainability of nonprofits. The process is really designed to maximize opportunities for success.”
Gary cites a number of other things he appreciates about being a Partner. Near the top of the list are the other Partners – a group he describes as full of people with “similar minds, similar business backgrounds, and similar social consciousness.” He appreciates the freedom to give more of his time when his schedule allows it, and less when life gets too busy. As well, he feels that his ability to make smart philanthropic decisions has been greatly enhanced by his participation on the New Grants Committee.
“Sitting on the committee has been very educational for me, opening my eyes to the breadth and depth of charitable organizations that there are in this city. The process helps me to think in new ways, helps them to think in new ways, and broadens everyone’s minds with new possibilities.”
